Cross-Curricular Skills

At St. Columbanus’ College, we recognise that a truly effective education is one that equips students with a versatile toolkit of skills that transcend individual subjects. In alignment with guidance from the Department of Education and CCEA, we ensure that cross-curricular skills are firmly embedded within every lesson and remain a central focus of every department’s aims.

We believe that every teacher is a teacher of skills, not just a deliverer of subject content. To uphold this standard, we dedicate specific staff development time each year to refining our pedagogical approaches. This ensures that every lesson has a clear cross-curricular element, helping our pupils see the connections between their subjects and the world around them.

Literacy

Literacy is the ability to communicate clearly and confidently through Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing.

Reading as a Priority: A major focus of our Literacy strategy is the development of a strong reading culture. We ensure that every pupil has dedicated reading time during their English lessons, alongside scheduled Library lessons in our well-resourced library. The advantages of this dedicated time are extensive:

  • Academic Growth: Regular reading significantly expands vocabulary and improves comprehension across all subjects.

  • Cognitive Development: It enhances focus, memory and critical thinking abilities.

  • Well-being: Reading is a proven tool for stress reduction and developing empathy by exploring different perspectives.

In our lessons: We emphasise the use of accurate terminology and expressive communication, ensuring pupils can adapt their language for different audiences and purposes.

Numeracy

Numeracy involves the practical application of mathematical ideas and techniques to solve problems and interpret information. Within our college, we expand this definition to include Financial Capability and Data Literacy.

  • Financial Capability: We equip pupils with the essential life skills needed to manage money, understand budgeting, and make informed financial decisions.

  • Data Literacy: Pupils learn how to critically analyze, interpret, and communicate data - a vital skill in a world driven by information.

  • In our lessons: These skills are not confined to the Mathematics department. Our pupils apply them in numerous subjects, such as when interpreting geographical statistics, measuring ingredients in Home Economics, or calculating data in Science and Technology & Design.

Digital Skills (Using ICT)

Digital Skills involve the ability to handle information, solve problems, and exhibit diverse creative responses through the use of technology.

  • In our lessons: As a college that prides itself on modern learning, we integrate ICT into the fabric of our classrooms. From digital research and data management to creative media production in English/Music/Moving Image Arts, our pupils learn to use technology safely, effectively and innovatively.

Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities (TSPC)

This framework focuses on the "how" of learning rather than just the "what." It is divided into five strands: Managing Information, Thinking/Problem-Solving, Being Creative, Working with Others, and Self-Management.

  • In our lessons: These skills are developed through the active, hands-on learning experiences we prioritise. By engaging in group projects, independent research, and peer-review tasks, our pupils become more resilient and independent learners who are prepared for the diverse pathways they will take after leaving our college.
